LayZSpa ChemConnect Dispensing Too Much Chlorine

So when I first got my Lay-z-spa Saint Tropez hot tub I bought the chlorine granules to keep the water in the spa clean. These worked really well as they kept the chlorine at the correct level after a shock dose and then adding 2 teaspoons a day of the granules to the water.

In fact I had no problems with this at all except that my only issue was having to make sure I was doing this whether I was using the hot tub or not that day. So I decided that it would make sense to try out the chlorine tablets with the special dispenser that came with the hot tub.

The ChemConnect fixes to the top connector in the hot tub that pumps out the hot water.

The ChemConnect  comes as part of the package with the 2019 Saint Tropez and I believe a number of other models. It means that you don’t have to have a floating dispenser as it is attached to the internal wall of the spa, above the filter.

So in theory you can just leave the ChemConnect in for however long the tablets last (which says 3-5 days).

However, having set the spa to the correct chlorine levels, I put one tablet into the ChemConnect and attached it to the connector. I put it on the lowest setting with a view to monitoring the chlorine levels and increasing if necessary. I then checked the chlorine levels in the evening, with the tablet having been in the tub all day.

The hot tub was consistently showing high chlorine levels when I left the ChemConnect in.

The results were not as I was expecting as the chlorine levels were on the highest that the scale showed for the test strips (very dark purple). I therefore had to take the ChemConnect dispenser out to ensure no more chlorine got into the hot tub.

I left it out all night and the levels had returned to normal in the morning.

So basically what I had to do was to put the dispenser in hot tub in the morning and take it out mid afternoon, otherwise there was too much chlorine in the hot tub. Annoyingly this now meant I was doing twice the work of when I was adding the granules, so completely defeating the object of getting the tablets!

As I can’t afford to waste them I am going to have to keep doing this but I did wonder if anyone else ended up with too much chlorine in the hot tub after using the ChemConnect and the chlorine tablets rather than the granules? Let me know in the comments if so, as I couldn’t find anything about this when doing a search.

Edit: As time has gone on the ChemConnect seems to work better for me. If I leave it on the lowest setting then it does seem to dispense the right amount of chlorine.

There are 4 settings you can put it on – they are basically holes in the side of the ChemConnect and the more holes you have open the more chlorine will be dispensed.

As long as I only have it open at the minimum setting the my chlorine levels are ok. I’m not sure why it was dispensing too much in the beginning but perhaps I had it on the wrong setting without realising.

  1. Hi there. I just got the Paris and having exactly the same issue with the Chem Connect. I have it closed so that none of the slots are visible but the chlorine still goes way too high. Did you ever manage to resolve your issue. Like yourself I’m thinking the granules are actually easier but don’t want to waste a whole tub of tablets..

    1. Hi Leon, I never really solved the issue but I have learnt to manage it instead! Wasn’t going to waste a whole box of tablets. I now make sure I test the water a fair while before we are going to use it if possible – so in the morning if we are using it afternoon/evening and take the chemconnect out if there is plenty of chlorine in. I have also found that if we don’t use it for a few days it doesn’t need the chlorine in so I will only put it in when we are using it. It’s a bit of a pain but you do get the hang of how much is going in. Having said that, I had to get a replacement liner (as the original one had a leak) and now I have the new one it is a bit better so I’m not sure why that is. I may still go back to the granules once I have used all the tablets but as I am getting used to managing it I may well change my mind!

      1. Thanks….Yes it is a bit of a pain as it should be less work, not more, looks like we will need to do similar and just take it out on the days that we want to use it

    2. Use it daily only for 8 hours with filtering enabled. Than turn it off and take the chem connect out. Thats it.

  2. I’ve got this exact same problem. Forgot to put the dose of chlorine granules in one day, so the water pretty quicky went green and murky. Had to shock treat again, cleared eventually then decided to buy tablets and use the dispenser.

The chlorine is on the high side, but more annoyingly the tablets are disappearing far too quickly (which is probably why the levels are so high). I’m adding new tablets in every 2 days. I’ve read elsewhere that inline dispensers with water moving over them will dissolve a tablet quicker, so I’ve bought a floating dispenser which arrives soon. I think that will bring my levels down, as the tablet will be dissolving at its own pace.

Still, we’ve had the kids in and myself even with these quite high values, we just don’t stay in for hours. And I know really dangerous levels can bleach the test strips – it’s not that bad!

    1. Hi Paul, yes I am finding that the tablets are dissolving too quickly. Yes that is a good point that the ChemConnect is attached to the heater so if it is pumping hot water through constantly that might be making it dissolve quicker. It is certainly dissolving in a couple of days. Maybe that is why no-one seems to have an issue with the floating dispenser and maybe I should do the same and get one of those.

      1. I just think life will be simpler with the floater instead, dissolving at a more manageable rate, and easy to lift out when you want to get in.

          1. Hi, I have the opposite problem! I started my new Layzspa using the Chemconnect and a 4 in 1 tablet and the levels were too low, so I had to shock dose with 2 capfuls of the chlorine granules to get purple on the paper. This morning I checked and the chlorine strip is white – so no chlorine! I had the chemconnect in continuously, I’ve tried adjusting the opening but the tablet is still almost new looking… I don’t think the chemconnect works so was thinking of buying a floater too….

          2. Hi Conrad that is strange, if the tablet isn’t dissolving then it sounds like there is a definite issue getting the water to flow through the chemconnect. As the heated water comes out of the connector with the chemconnect on then the warm water must get in to the chemconnect so it’s just a question of figuring out why the water isn’t coming out the other side! If it is new then it is worth contacting Bestway to see if there is some issue but I think they are a bit snowed under at the moment so I wouldn’t expect a quick reponse!
I have updated the page with a few images of my ChemConnect as it now seems to be working OK when I have it on minimum setting.

  3. Hi! I’m trying to hook a chemconnect up in an above ground pool but I can’t seem to find the part that the chemconnect actually mounts on to. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

    1. I’ve got the chemconnect fitted to an Above-Ground pool also. It came as part of the BestWay pool package.
If you unscrew the face of the inlet guard (inside the pool) then the ChemConnect will take it’s place.

  4. I only just noticed my new spa came with one of these. Been using and floating dispenser for the first week with 3 tablets in it (used up in about a week) the the chlorine level about right). Shocking it now as it got a lot of use in it’s first week. We have the st Moritz.

Love my tub. Been in the garden even when weather awful but I’m toasty warm and sheltered. Love it 🙂

Might skip trying the chem connect. Constant pump of hot water past the tablets has got to dissolve them a lot slower than the floating dispenser I got with my tub chemicals.

    1. Hi Richard, I am now a fan of the ChemConnect! Saves having to take the floating dispenser in and out and with the different opening levels I find I can control how much chlorine is dispensed. I think with a lot of things hot tub related though everyone finds what works best for them!

      1. I’m very new to all of this and am still trying to balance my chemicals before trying my hot tub for the first time. When I’m up to the point of daily maintenance, I’m considering using my chemconnect – do I remove this whenever we use the spa (like I’ve read that I would with a floating unit) or leave it attached all of the time? Thanks

        1. Hi Jo and sorry for the delay in replying. You can leave it connected the whole time so it saves the effort of taking it off and putting it back on again.

          1. Hi just got one today 🙂 and just wondering since we don’t have to remove it would we turn it so there no opening for when we are using it ?

          2. Hi Jess, I guess you could do that but I haven’t bothered because I have it on the lowest setting so I don’t think it would cause any issues while in. Also I would probably forget to turn it back on again!

  5. Hi,
We recently purchased a new spa with a Chem connect. We found that there was no chlorine being dispensed when tested. We have a swimming pool and I used the same chlorine test kit which we have used for several years. Without waffling on….I looked at the chem connect and could not see how it could dispense. There are only 4 tiny holes in it, having looked at a few pictures of others it seems there are slots, which makes sense, allowing the dissolving chlorine to escape. Has anyone else seen this ?
    Andy

    1. Hi Andy, yes the ChemConnect that I have has the 4 holes as per the pictures above. You can twist the grey part to set the number of holes – are you saying that yours doesn’t have these?

    1. Hi, yes I have it on the whole time but just leave one hole open so it is only dispensing a small amount at a time.
