I recently flew from London to Dubai (in my case Stansted, which also involved Ryanair flights) with Wizz Air, a relatively new Hungarian airline who offer very cheap flights to Dubai as well as other locations. As I know people are interested in what the cheap flights to Dubai are like, I thought it worth writing a review.
Let’s start with the price point, which was the whole point of me booking the flights. The total cost Stansted to Dubai return was £240. However, I got a £20 voucher from kiwi.com who I booked through as I was a first time customer, so the actual cost was £220. They were very good in checking my in automatically and sending me my boarding cards.
Obviously there is a downside to this at that price! The downside was that both journeys involved a 10 hour layover in different cities. On the way out it was Bucharest. I arrived there late evening with my connecting flight going out in the morning. I was able to stay in the airport without any problems but the seats all had armrests so getting some sleep was tricky!
On the way back, it was a similar layover in Vienna. This was a bit more confusing as the gate I needed to go to wasn’t open overnight so I lay down on the cold hard floor in the check in area for a few hours before going through security at 5am. The seats were better in Vienna as they didn’t all have arm rests so it was possible to lay down and try to get a few hours sleep.
The Wizz Air flights themselves were fine. The planes were modern and comfortable. In terms of luggage at the basic price you can only take a small backpack 40 x 30 x20cm, like other low cost airlines. I managed to keep to this as I was only on a short trip. You can buy an extra luggage allowance if you need to.
Both out and return flights were pretty bumpy. In fact the turbulence on the way out was so bad I was sick, but I guess that can happen with any airline. My only thought was maybe on a standard airline with a bigger plane, the turbulence might not be felt so much?
Wizz Air flies in to terminal 2 in Dubai so you do then have to find yourself transport from there as the metro only connects at terminals 1 and 3.
Overall I think it’s great value for money if you have the time and patience to do the transfers and you are not bothered with a lack of sleep (or are able to sleep anywhere!)
For me the timings worked out ok so it was fine but I’d only do the trip again if I really needed to save money!
