How Can You Tell a Facebook Competition is Fake?

There are so many fake facebook pages out there trying to get us to click the like and share buttons with competitions and giveaways. So many of these facebook competitions are actually fake sadly.

There are a number of reasons why someone would set up a fake facebook page and competition even though sometimes they seem a bit unfathomable! But mostly they want us to like and share stuff so that more people like their page and maybe they can get hold of all our details and that of our friends to spam us with stuff or do even worse. How Many People Will I Reach for a $1 Boost?

So this was on my mind recently when I realised that the only way to reach the majority of people who had liked my facebook page was to boost one or more of my posts.

I had, like everyone else with a facebook page, come to the realisation that effectively facebook pages are not free advertising any more, because facebook limits the number of people who see what I post. It seems like my posts only get seen by about 15% of people who like my page (at the most, sometimes less) and most of those people are friends of mine who are probably not really the people I am trying to reach, much as I love them 🙂

So I wondered, if I paid to boost my post, how many people will I reach for a $1 boost?

I put in $1 to the amount field but it told me it couldn’t compute how many people this would reach! So I thought I would conduct an experiment with that $1 and see what the results were.

The result was that 41 people were reached by paying $1. Now I guess it depends on demographics and area etc as to whether it would be the same again for another day or another page, but at least this gives a bit of a guide. The other interesting thing was that unpaid reach was much more than on any other post too, I would say at least 25% more, so it seems that maybe paying this dollar helps to spread your post in other ways too.

I will likely pay the odd dollar here and there to keep my posts in people’s feeds although I’m not totally sure how much extra business it might get me!

Stop Pinterest Posting on Facebook

So Pinterest seems to be the fastest growing social media site right now and it definitely has it’s own little niche that makes it stand out from the rest. But the truth is it is still in relatively early stages and there are some issues that need tweaking.

One issue is how to stop all of your Pinterest pins being posted on your facebook wall. When you first sign in to Pinterest with your facebook logon, it automatically starts posting to your wall. In order to stop it doing this you need to go to your facebook settings, then to Apps and then edit the Pinterest app. You can stop it posting or else set the posts so that only you can see them.

It may well be the case that you don’t want all of your facebook friends seeing what you are posting on Pinterest so this is a good way to stop them knowing everything that you are doing on there.

Facebook Charging?

From time to time there are rumors of facebook charging for membership of the site. The latest facebook charging rumor going round is as follows:

“FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS
OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY”

If you see someone posting this as their status then don’t believe it, it is not true and none of the other rumors of facebook charging are true either! Firstly, even if facebook were to charge for membership, they would not release the information like this, through people adding it to their status. They have everyone’s email address and it would be the kind of major change that would need people to know about it well in advance and agree to it.

But before we even get into that, the chances of facebook charging for membership are pretty minimal. Would you actually pay for facebook membership? I for one would not. There are plenty of options out there for keeping in touch that would make it impossible for facebook charging to occur. Twitter, mySpace, Linked In and now Google plus – there is no way facebook would survive if it were to start charging.

Facebook already earn money through advertising revenue and that has been expanding in the last few years as brands and even small companies realise the power of facebook, but facebook charging for membership? Not in my lifetime.
