How Do You Get the Grit Out of the Bottom of a Hot Tub?

So you have a hot tub, in my case a lay-z-spa Saint Tropez but obviously it could be any other kind of inflatable hot tub (and may well work on a fixed one too) and you have some bits of grit and dirt in the bottom of the tub. Are you trying to figure out how to get rid of the dirt out of the bottom without emptying the whole tub?

There are a few ways you can do it, including buying a pool/tub vacuum which will do the job nicely for you. But the decent ones can cost around £40 and the truth is you don’t actually have to spend any money to do this.

I have to confess this was not my idea – I am a member of a great lay-z-spa owners support group page and a few people suggested doing this so I tried it out for myself to see if and how it worked.

short length of hosepipeWhat You Need

All you need is a short length of hose (I had a piece that was about 3m long) and the hose connectors.

How to Do It

Firstly connect the hosepipe to the tap. One of my hose connectors was a stop attachment so I put that on the end that was not connected to the tap which meant that when I turned the tap on, the water did not come out of the end. If you don’t have a stop connector then just put your finger over the end of the hose so that the water doesn’t come out.

Once the hose is full of water, disconnect it from the tap while keeping the water in the hosepipe by blocking both ends.

Put one end of the hose into the water and take your finger/thumb off that end. Make sure the other end of the hosepipe is at a lower level and is draining somewhere.

remove grit from a hot tub with a hosepipeYou can then also take your thumb off the other end (or remove the stop cap) and the water should start flowing out of the tub.

Just position the hose in the water at the bottom where the grit and dirt is, and it will take that out with it.

As long as you keep the hose below the level of the water, it will keep acting like a vacuum and clear off the dirt from the bottom, while also emptying some water.

In theory, you can suck the water through the hosepipe to start the siphon but I really did not want to do this and not sure if I would have been able to start it!

Hope this helps someone!
